During this holiday season, I saw two different kinds of situations, when friends and family pitched in: when things are going bad and when there is something to celebrate. Among the sea of wrapping paper, gifts and gift cards that society would have us celebrate, I can’t help but think about the real blessings that should be celebrated.

As I wrote in “The Two Sides of Christmas,” I asked about which we value more, during the holidays: things or loved ones. I couldn’t help but think about this again, when I saw two people in my close circle going through some challenges. Well wishes started pouring immediately. In one situation, offers to watch their children and other support was offered. Then, I found out that a friend, after a long period of trying, finally was able to conceive a child. I, immediately, sent my best wishes, as I was reminded how parenthood doesn’t come easily to everybody. I can only imagine how humbling it was to see how much that the people around you care.

Sometimes, I see the label “friend” casually tossed around. “My friend….” Are they really? If there was an emergency, would they be there to take care of your kids? Would they send food over? If necessary, would they organize or contribute to a fundraiser? Are they there to offer a heartfelt congratulatory message? Would this “friend” do any of these things or more?

The three people that I mentioned are just three examples of when friends and family come together to truly show that “we have your back.” Real family (not always by blood) will be there, at a moment’s notice, to pick you up, when you need it. They are, also, there to celebrate your life’s happiest moments to say, “I couldn’t be happier for you” and you can feel it. Family and true friends are there for you and will outlast any physical gift that you receive.

I am thankful for the things that I received, as my loved ones worked hard to provide them. However, I am even more thankful to have these loved ones in my life and I suspect that the three people that I mentioned are super thankful to have their loved ones around them, as well. Loved are the blessings that I celebrate and I hope that you do, too.

DON’T WAIT FOR SOMETHING BIG TO HAPPEN TO SHOW YOUR LOVED ONES JUST HOW MUCH YOU CARE.
